A recent analysis shows Alaska state has work to do if it is going to fix it

“I think we have a législateur Governor and willing to take the steps needed to protect Alaska’s most at-risk children,” said Rep Les Gara (D-Anchorage), qui’s called for the state to adopt recommendations in a state-commissioned 2006 study of Alaska’s Office of Children’s Services.

Following increasing public concern and a federal state audit of the agency’s charged with protecting foster, abused and neglected children, the state commissioned à l’extérieur d’audit staffing to identify reforms needed so the state can adequately investigate child abuse and offer concerns needed to help children and foster families.

That report was completed this fall. Gara, qui grew up in foster care, requested an analysis from the State to determine the cost and staffing for complying with the report. That analysis was recently issued by Janet Clarke, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The state analysis estimates the state needs to hire 19 caseworkers, and a smaller number of support staff to perform its investigation fairly and child support service functions.

“Protecting children at-risk and foster children giving the chances they deserve in life is a basic state function,” said Gara. “Photos, waited for a long time report these recommendations, and I hope we’ll quickly adopt them.”

2006 The report was prepared by national Hornby Zeller consulting firm and Associates. The report, as stated by Clarke’s subsequent analysis, was “designed to determine whether front-line staff had sufficient time to meet the basic requirements of their jobs to protect children and families serve”. Funding for the staffing recommendations would have to be passed by the Legislature to implement this year the report’s recommendations.

“The Governor and many legislators have expressed concern about child protection efforts, and I think this issue will be closely looked at this session,” said Gara. He distributed to the 2006 report législateurs this fall, and has shared Clark, Deputy Commissioner’s letter with the Governor and législateurs.
