Consummate prosecutor has played several roles
Lloyd Cutler, 87, Washington legal mandarin for six decades, as a party representing the White House under President Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, died yesterday in his home in Washington. He had complications of a broken hip.Cutler was a commanding presence of capital movements and elites of power at home in the highest levels of industry, government and politics. He was a founding partner of Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, one of the main city law firms. Last year, he merged with a company from Boston to Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, with offices on three continents and more than 1000 lawyers.
Cutler was a Democrat, has been independent in its judicial work. Among his clients Liberal is in the interest of large enterprise groups, including trade associations for cars, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Its clients involved The Washington Post Co., CBS, Bethlehem Steel, emperor of Steel, IBM, American Express, Pan American World Airways and the Long Island Rail Road.
At one time, it supports prominent Republicans, like former Secretaries of State George P. Shultz, Henry Kissinger and James A. Baker III. Once upon a time a referee for the Rolling Stones at a divergence of views with the band manager, and perhaps in one of its lowest rung of success, persuaded Mick Jagger to wear a tie at the Metropolitan Club .
Louis R. Cohen, a partner with the company and former deputy general counsel of USA, said that for many, his head “politically and legally defined public policy in Washington.” He cited Cutler’s active role on issues important his life, including the law of the sea and public policies in housing, railroads and disarmament.
